The story is set in the 1930s, somewhere in the mountains in Romania. It centres on Simion, a ranger who lives like a hermit in the middle of the forest. One day, he stumbles upon a beaten-up woman, Irina, and tries to find out who has hurt her. He also tries to stay away from her but fails.。居住在镰仓的大学教授曾宫周吉早年丧偶，他与女儿纪子相依为命。纪子从小担负起家庭的重担，悉心照顾父亲的生活起居。转眼间，纪子已二十七岁，依旧待字闺中。纪子的姑姑和朋友都很关心她的婚事，然而她却因为对父亲的依恋，不愿谈婚论嫁。不久姑姑为周吉介绍一名独身女子三轮秋子，周吉欣然同意。得知此事的纪子心中感到无限的怅然。。
