由于父亲涌井勇吉（寺尾聪 饰）长年被派驻国外，儿子涌井拓郎（二宫和也 饰）经常遭人欺负，叛逆之下，成为了飙车族的成员。在一次驾驶中，因和母亲（大竹忍 饰）发生争执导致车祸发生，母亲当场死亡。得知爱妻去世的消息，勇吉伤心不已，辞去了工作，在爱妻的故乡富野良的一个森林中开了一家叫做“森时计”的咖啡厅。而拓郎则由母亲生前好友朋子（余贵美子 饰）介绍到一家叫“皆空窑”的窑厂学习陶艺。勇吉对儿子心中怀有怨恨，而拓郎也自觉无颜见到父亲。二人虽然距离很近，2年间却没有任何联系。这样的关系被拓郎偶然结识的少女皆川梓（长泽雅美 饰）所打破，而梓正好又在森时计打工。 森时计维系着勇吉对妻子的思念，也治愈着来此歇息的人群。同样的，也在无形中愈合着勇吉和拓郎的关系。温柔时刻，温暖人心。。Set inside a pre-war duplex in downtown Manhattan, The Humans follows the course of an evening in which the Blake family gathers to celebrate Thanksgiving.
